Review: Zack and Miri Make a Porno

“Let us fuck!”

No one unites my friends and has been more responsible for us being who we are (as sad as that sounds) than Kevin Smith. “Clerks” came out when the most of us started college. We make regular pilgrimages to New Jersey just to worship at Quick Stop Convenience and RST Video respectively. Quoting the movies has been adapted into our vernacular. In other words, we’re fans. And as fans, “Zack and Miri Make a Porno” did not disappoint.

It was the first story told outside of the “View Askewniverse” we’ve grown accustomed to (no, I don’t count Jersey Girl), but it was still chock full o’ the dialogue we’ve grown to appreciate, and was just as simple as the title sounds. There are two characters named Zack and Miri, and they make a porno. They were life long friends who need money to pay the rent, so they decided to shoot a porn where they had sex with each other. ‘Nuff said.

(Though the plot was slightly similar to a running gag my friends and I have stemming from “Chasing Amy,” where all out problems would be solved if we all just slept with each other. I digress).

There were a few cringe worthy moments (in a good way) and the movie was laugh out loud funny to where I need to see it a second time with a notebook so I can write down the lines I want to start quoting…though the most quotable line was actually me saying to a friend, “I don’t think that’s coffee.” The sentimental part that you saw coming a mile away was the same sentimental part you see coming a mile away in every story, but it didn’t take away from my enjoyment of the movie.

I have but two criticisms:

1. No cameo from Ben Affleck or Jason Lee.

2. I could have lived the rest of my life without ever having seen Jason Mewes’s cock.

If you like Kevin Smith, if you like dick and fart jokes, or if you like porn…this is the flick for you. If you don’t, why are you even reading this in the first place?
