Since neither fighter’s last fight lasted long enough for them to get tired let alone injured, methinks we’ll be getting the Brock Lesnar vs. Frank Mir fight sooner rather than later. If I were a betting man, I’d say we’ll see it in April as part of a double main event opposite Anderson Silva vs. Red Shirt guy from the U.S.S. Enterprise.
There are four key components for a mega-fight, and Lesnar vs. Mir meet three out of the four. One of those components is when neither fighter has fought before, and since this would be there second fight, we’ll leave that one unchecked.
As for the other three…
1. A Championship – Brock is the heavyweight champion. Mir is the interim heavyweight champion (stemming from a legal dispute between the UFC and Randy Couture). Both fighters will be looking to unify the titles and determine who the undisputed heavyweight champion is.
2. Backstory – Besides the title and the personal backstory Frank Mir will bring into every fight until he’s the undisputed champ, their last fight is the backstory. It was Brock Lesnar’s first fight in the UFC, and some say that had the referee not stopped the fight because of an accidental strike to the back of the head, Brock would have won the fight via ref stoppage.
3. Natural Heroes and Villains – Everyone loves a good fight between, if you’ll excuse the professional wrestling terms, a “face” and a “heel.” Frank Mir is beloved by the MMA world, and is one fight away from completing one of the greatest comebacks in the history of the sport. Brock Lesnar is a former professional wrestler “invading” the UFC, and just one the title by defeating one of the most decorated fighters in MMA history. Plus, Brock loves getting booed.
As a bonus, this is my time trying to put a poll in one of my blog posts. Let’s see if this works…
