Shogun vs Iceman at UFC 97

I don’t know what Shogun Rua/Mark Coleman fight the UFC was watching that they awarded it “Fight of the Night,” but they did and now Shogun has his next opponent lined up…Chuck Liddell.

Here’s MMA Weekly with the report…

Mauricio “Shogun” Rua will have little time to savor his hard fought victory over Mark Coleman at UFC 93 in Dublin, Ireland. The Brazilian light heavyweight has already been tapped to headline UFC 97 against Chuck Liddell, scheduled for Apr. 18 in Montreal, Canada. The card is the promotion’s second date in the French Canadian province.

The bout was originally rumored to take place at UFC 85, but a knee injury to Rua scratched the possibility. Saturday’s fight was his first since a submission loss to Forrest Griffin at UFC 76.

The other main even fight rumoured for the show is Anderson Silva defending the middleweight title against Guy Who Says “I’ll Be Right Back” in a Horror Movie, and while I’m sure the title fight will headline, Liddell vs. Rua will be the main draw.

This fight (Liddell/Rua) would have been more exciting two years ago when both fighters were in their prime. But Chuck Liddell is 1-3 in his last four fights, and even though Shogun is stepping off of a knockout victory, a lot of the “mystique” has worn off him and a lot of the other PRIDE fighters. Instead of being the top light heavyweight in the world, he lately looks like just another good 205er…and the UFC has a lot of those.

Whoever loses this fight is going to have to take a long, hard look in the mirror.
