Apparently UFC 102: COUTURE VS. NOGUEIRA should have been called UFC 102: YOU JUST GOT KNOCKED THE FUCK OUT. The show had three of the sickest (and quickest) knock-outs we’ve seen, plus a classic war between two MMA veterans…
UFC 102 RESULTS: Minaturo Nogueira defeated Randy Couture by unanimous decision, Thiago Silva knocked out Keith Jardine in short fashion, Nate Marquardt knocked out Demian Maia in even shorted fashion (find a clip of this KO on YouTube), Jake Rosholt scored what might be considered an upset by chocking out Chris Leben, Brandon Vera scored a decision win over Krzysztof Soszynski.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR NOGUEIRA?: That’s a good question. Champion Brock Lesnar is set to fight the undefeated Shane Carwin next. Equally undefeated Cain Velasquez is scheduled for Ben Rothwell, and former champion Frank Mir has Cheick Kongo. I honestly don’t know where Big Nog fits in this, other than the fact he’s obviously in the mix. Rematch against Mir?
WHAT’S NEXT FOR COUTURE?: That’s an even better question, especially since 46 year old Couture just signed a new six fight deal. I can’t imagine him dropping back down to light-heavyweight, so he’ll probably wind up fighting any of the heavyweights I just mentioned. Or, maybe a Tito Ortiz rematch?
WHAT’S NEXT FOR ANDERSON SILVA?: Anderson Silva’s next opponent for the middleweight title is up in the air, with Nate Marquardt and Dan Henderson both in contention. Silva already destroyed them both in the past, so the fans aren’t exactly clamoring for a rematch. I like the idea of Marquardt and Henderson fighting it out, with that winner being the #1 contender. That lets Anderson take another light heavyweight fight. Who exactly that would be is anyone’s guess.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE UFC?: Upcoming big fights include Rich Franklin vs. Vitor Belfort (UFC 103), Lyoto Machida vs. Shogun Rua (UFC 104), Brock Lesnar vs. Shane Carwin (UFC 106), Tito Ortiz vs. Mark Coleman (UFC 106), and Rashad Evans vs. Rampage Jackson (UFC 107).
