Marco Rubio: “Small Government Rocks My Socks”

Messaging matters.

Liberals have a great message. Vote for us. We’ll give you tons of free stuff that you’ll never have to pay for, and we’ll take money away from people who have more than you to pay for it. Of course, you and I both know it’s bullshit, but on its surface…who doesn’t like free schtuff?

Small government conservatives have a habit of sounding angry and mean. Yeah, a lot of that has to do with the media cherry picking people who are angry and mean, but we don’t always do the best job of disputing the stereotype ourselves. Enter a cat like Marco Rubio. He’s a strong an advocate of small government and conservative principles as we have, but he doesn’t sound angry or mean

“You know what the fastest growing religion in America is? Statism. The growing reliance on government,” Rubio said. “Every time a problem emerges, increasingly the reaction in American society is ‘Well what can government do about it?’ America became the greatest country because of its strong society where people did not sit back and wait for government to act. They did it themselves.”

“We can not continue to allow this over reliance on government to replace the cornerstone institution that has made the American experience possible…The things I believe in I think are mainstream thoughts in America. I believe that our tax code is too complicated and too burdensome, I think America is spending money it doesn’t have and it’s going to bankrupt us, I think the world is a safer place when America is the strongest country in the world. Sixty to 70 percent of Americans agree with my position on those issues.”

Later when talking aboot the second amendment…

“This is a cross section of the people of Florida – all ethnicities, all party registrations are here. People from all walks of life are here…The Second Amendment is a constitutional right. I didn’t make it up, the Republican Party didn’t make it up. It’s in the Constitution. I think it’s just as important as any of the other rights in our constitution.”

A far cry from, “…from my cold, dead hands.” Don’t you think? Here’s hoping that other Republican challengers this year are following Marco Rubio’s lead, because it seems to be working for him (and us) this far.
