Uh-oh! Chris Christie Hearts Amnesty!

Ok, not really. However he did say the words “immigration reform” and “demagogue” in a recent interview with Politico.com, and while he’s been the darling of conservatives while he’s been cutting spending and taking on the unions…could this be the other show we’ve been waiting to drop? Chris Christie…a RINO?!?

It was a wide ranging interview, that main covered the work he’s done in New Jersey and aboot his growing popularity amongst conservatives nationwide…and I believe it was his first “national” interview where he spoke on issues outside of local ones (I could be wrong).

I personally don’t think he said anything all that out there, and agree when it comes to “rebranding” ourselves around economic issues. Others who have been singing his praises, however…

On the hot-button topic of immigration reform, he said he has long declined to “demagogue” the issue as a former U.S. Attorney, because “I come from law enforcement and it’s not an easy issue.”

But he did intimate that he thinks stringent state-by-state laws – such as in Arizona – are the wrong approach, and added, “I think President Obama doesn’t do this at his own risk because it’s affecting the economy in the country…to me, I think the president’s really gotta show the leadership on this.”

“This is a federal problem, it’s gotta have a federal fix,” he said. “I’m not really comfortable with state law enforcement having a big role.”

He said that without border security, enforcement of existing laws and a “clear” path to legalization for immigrants, there would never be a fix.

So what do we think? Christie the RINO? Christie the pragmatist?

  1. I think most conservatives, and the country even, have a “willing to work” approach towards the illegal immigrant issues…HOWEVER, when the federal government is making a public showing of not wanting to even enforce the laws that exist…they’re cornered. If the feds don’t do the job they already have…no one is going to support letting them have what they want…which is getting out of doing their job.

Add to the pool the “voter drive” that amnesty looks to be…people are even LESS inclined to compromise their ultimate desire – kick them the F out.

Oh…and note the order he gave those things in: Border security first and enforcement of existing laws. So…if the situation is under control…we can talk. Right now it’s chaos that causes violence and costs tons and tons of money.

    My $.02.
