REVIEW: Jonah Goldberg’s “Tyranny of Cliches: How Liberals Cheat in the War of Ideas”

Someone needs to design a Jonah Goldberg app for the iPhone. After reading “Tyranny of Cliches: How Liberals Cheat in the War of Ideas,” the next time I have someone telling me at a bar that “it’s about fairness” or “I’m an independent” I would love to have Jonah’s arguments only a touch screen away. The best I can ever come up with on my own is “so’s your face.”

We’ve all gotten into debates with liberals (or seen Debbie Wasserman Shultz and David Axelrod on the TV) where they throw clichés at you and act like you just got served. You need look no further than the Wisconsin recall. Scott Walker’s supporters have fact and figures on their (our) side, and metrics where they (we) can say Gov. Walker did “x” resulting in “y” happening. Walker’s opponents only seem to have “tax cuts for the rich” and “mic check, we are the 99%).

(Well that, going after his family, and accusing his Lt. Gov. of performing sexual acts to get promoted. Union thugs Obama supporters open minded and tolerant liberal progressives sure are a classy bunch)

Jonah Goldberg is having none of it in “Tyranny of Clichés.” He indentifies twenty four of the most common, gives the history from where the clichés stem from, and totally annihilates the intellectual laziness behind using them, mocking those who do with his trademark sense of humour:

“Jesus had the idea we should all love each other. Hitler had the idea of a of a thousand-year reich. Steven Bochco had the idea the ‘Cop Rock’ would be a hit. Clear we can distinguish between the good, the bad, and the ugly.”

“If you cannot understand why having a blanket policy against labels is a terrible idea, I urge you to march into your kitchen and peel the wrappers of all your cleaning supplies, prescription drugs, and canned goods. Natural selection will take care of the rest in due time.”

This book will prove to be invaluable for conservatives in the upcoming election, because the Obama Campaign’s entire agenda seems to be based entire in clichés. His health care bill, his occupy movement, his arbitrary sense of ‘fairness’ when it comes to taxes and who he decides his next boogeyman is going to be…it’s all clichés and phrases to be chanted over and over again.

In “Tyranny of Cliches: How Liberals Cheat in the War of Ideas,” Jonah Goldberg gives us the information we need to fight back, and more importantly, mocking and ridiculing them as we do so.
