UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones was born and raised in upstate New York, and if the Onondaga Legislature has it’s say, his fall title defense could be at the Carrier Dome. While Albany debates the issue, the legislature is expected to vote on a resolution in April to call on Albany to finally regulate mixed martial arts in New York.
County Legislator John Dougherty, who is making the motion, says the time is now.
“This could be a tremendous revenue generator for Onondaga County and the rest of New York State. The State Senate has already voted to approve MMA in New York and I hope the State Assembly does the same before the end of their current session.”
The resolution is expected unanimous, or at the very least, near unanimous support…and I *think* Dougherty and the Onondaga Legislature are the first county legislature to endorse (if your Googling skills are better then mine, let me know).
